Purchased a Champion 100261 3100/3400 watt inverter geberator for RV use. This is replacing a defective Yamaha 2800 watt unit. The unit was shipped via UPS, and received in good condition 6 days later. Packaging was well-designed to protect the unit from shipping damage.
After unpacking, I filled the crankcase with 10W30 oil, and put 2 quarts of gas in the fuel tank. The internal battery was fully charged upon receipt of the generator. It took 4 starting attempts with the remote control to before the unit ran smoothly, presumably because the fuel system was dry. Subsequent starts using the remote were quick and efficient.
I connected the unit to our RV, and found that it easily started our 15000 BTU rear air conditioner, using the eco-throttle mode. After a couple of hours of break-in, I loaded the unit to 26 amps using a resistive load (heaters). This was 3120 watts, and the generator held this load with no difficulty, with an output voltage of 118v.
Noise level of the generator is slightly higher than the Yamaha unit it replaced, but not objectionably so. The slight additional noise seems to be exhaust noise, not mechanical noise.
One disappointment I had was as follows. I contacted Champion Customer Support to inquire about validity of the 3-year warranty when we travel to Canada, as we do several months each year. I was informed that Canadian Champion dealers would not service the unit, as this particular model with remote starting is not available in Canada. The reason stated for this refusal of warranty coverage was that the unit is not CSA approved, which I found petty and odd, to say the least. There has been no CSA approval standard in Canada for a number of years, as it has been replaced with ULC approval. I agree that the generator has UL, not ULC approval, but to deny warranty service to a traveling customer seems strange. One could compare it this situation to a new vehicle purchased in the USA, and taken to Canada. The vehicle does not meet Canadian government standards, but Canadian dealers would obviously still provide warranty service in the event of a warranty problem. Peculiar, and disappointing.
